Get your kicks on Route 66
Arizona

Flagstaff, Arizona, don't forget Winona

Arizona. What a place. Damn. When we hit Winslow, we had to play the Eagle's Take it Easy twice. I doubt we were the first to do this :) We took a few side trips in Arizona - like through the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest and since I had never been through this part of AZ, we had to leave the route and see Sedonia....had to eat breakfast there.....had to buy some touristshit there....and drive through those glorious canyons back into Flagstaff.

Flagstaff........now forever remembered as the city which has squashed slugs in their beds *shudder* and on through the state toward California. We didn't forget Winona and had some of our best talks with people in Arizona. Some cool old places like Seligman and Kingman.

The road from Seligman to Kingman to Oatman and into Needles, California is the most harrowing part of the drive. It takes you up and up and up and up the mountain along a narrow twisty-turny 2-lane drive, with no barriers along the cliffs. We had to drive up in second, sometimes falling into granny gear, and never faster than 20-25 miles an hour. To avoid driving off the cliffs, we made the twisty-turns down the middle of the narrow road and had to slow at many turns in case a car was descending. Imagine if you were driving this in a big ol motor home! Our neat little touristtrip book (written in 1941) said that there was a tow-truck in Oatman which would come and haul your car up the mountain if it couldn't make it. We held our breath :) Oatman has burros running through the street (there is only one street in Oatman - Route 66!). The town had become a ghost town but is again almost "thriving" due to tourists

Then I crossed the Colorado River into California.
