orianna and I kissed
nolte good bye, waved from the packed car and headed down I-5. I have
driven this highway a bazillion times so I tend to just drive it.
Seeing it anew from my friend's eyes made it fresh again. We stopped
in Grants Pass to visit LoisLane and then
left the known world behind.
We turned off I-5 toward Nevada just below Weed in California to
drive through the Mt. Shasta area and then along the Lassen National
Volcanic area. My job was to drive. ori's job was to watch for deer
and cows. One young deer hopped across the two-lane highway right
beside the "Watch for Deer" sign. At another point, three cows
meandered their way through the forest across the road.
How do they know where to cross the highway? Are there cows and
deer in bright orange vests carrying crosswalk flags that show them
the way? I read about a woman who wanted the "Deer Crossing" sign
removed from her street because she was tired of them crossing
there.......
We arrived in Reno -- our first night's stop -- later than we
planned because of a few side trips along the way. We hit the sheets
and only drove through the main street on our way out the next day.
On to Day Two
